Whether we like it or not, what happens in the EU has a big impact on the UK. Europe is by far our most important overseas market and trading partner. And, just in case anyone missed it, the Eurozone was this week confirmed to be in the sixth successive quarter of Recession. So how the Government ...

I travelled with a group of colleagues recently to Berlin, to meet with German politicians, business leaders and think tanks to discuss ideas for reform of the EU. We wanted to share with them some of the ideas of the Fresh Start Project, and to understand the German perspective on European issues. ...
French and German politicians have for decades been able to extract maximum benefit out of the EC the ambivalent UK has never been able to decide whether we are prepared to be one of now 27 countries in an organisation where the accounts are never signed off due to "unexplained" missing money. The Treaty of Rome is very clear cut full political, monetary and social union in effect like the USA of America with member nations becoming rather like an individual state. In reality British business has failed to grasp the full opportunties and the "magic solution" the EC was thought to be to boost the poor UK Economic growth rate proved as illusionary as all the other magic solutions that have been put forward over the years. What your views above illustrate is that as in many other ways the Germans are pragmatic, longsighted and utterly determined to do what is best for Germany first. Their industrial strength is based on such longsighted policies. They would never tolerate the short term speculation of the City that has sold many British firms to overseas buyers.

I welcome your views and hope that you can persuade the party to share these. I also think our roads are in an appalling state and this must not be allowed to continue. I am surprised that the deep potholes are not resulting in serious accidents, especially for motorcyclists.

On the BBC and by most pro-EC supporters the link between UK and EC trade is always made but the simple fact is that the opportuntities supposedly argued for in the referendum of 1976 the benefits for British business have led in reality to a £30bn deficit in trade. British Business are losing the battle against Ec imports. Therefore the long sighted Germans are never going to want to lose a major export market hence the inevitable free trade agreement if the Uk pulls out of the EC. The eurozone is and was also going to be disaster any half intelligent sixth former taking economics at A level could have predicted the social and economic problems this is causing. Too many countries and too diverse in economic performance to work unless of course you accept what Churchill did not accept a German dominated Europe but this time controlling the purse strings.
