HS2 Meeting Update

Many constituents have contacted me over the past few weeks to raise their concerns about the continuation of HS2 construction work, particularly as we all follow the Government’s social distancing guidelines to halt the spread of Coronavirus.

Today I spoke with the HS2 Minister, Andrew Stephenson MP, to directly raise the lack of scrutiny taking place at this time - recently, all community meetings with HS2 have been cancelled, and constituents are rightly concerned about the lack of social distancing at HS2 construction sites.  I also raised with the Minister the wider issue of long-term value to the taxpayer, particularly as we work from home during this unprecedented public health crisis.

The Minister confirmed that his Department and HS2 are looking at how community engagement can be undertaken remotely, particularly the HS2 Liaison Group that I set up some years ago, that allows community, parish, district and county representatives to meet with HS2 every other month. Additionally, steps are being taken to see how communication directly with affected communities can be improved.

Where social distancing can be safely undertaken construction work will continue. If you continue to be concerned by any lack of social distancing please contact me by email (andrea.leadsom.mp@parliament.uk), sending photographs and location details where possible.

I also raised individual constituent cases with the Minister, highlighting those that have experienced unacceptable compensation/claim delays, loss of land, business and access issues.

If you or your community are directly affected by the HS2 line of route and have ongoing concerns that need to be addressed, please get in touch with me – I am keen to raise these on your behalf in search of a speedy and acceptable resolution.

I welcome the Minister’s commitment to look into these specific concerns and the wider issues that South Northamptonshire is facing due to HS2.

My position on HS2 has been consistent since I was first elected, that I do not believe it offers value for money to the taxpayer, and it is not the right project for the UK.  I will continue to stand up for my constituents and South Northamptonshire on this important issue.
