Adjournment Debate: Air Quality in Towcester

Last night I had an Adjournment debate entitled Air Quality: Towcester. I raised constituents’ concerns about traffic, safety and air quality problems, as well as the urgent need for the Relief Road to be completed and for capacity of our infrastructure to be taken into account when considering the large number of warehousing development applications in our area.

Specifically, I asked the Minister for Transport what further action can be taken to stop HGVs using the A5 before the relief road is built, National Highway’s intention to introduce a 7.5tn weight restriction, expedition of the programme of signage and traffic calming measures, action to stop over-development and the cumulative impact of ongoing infrastructure projects on traffic and other measures that could help improve air and noise quality in Towcester.

I will be following up with the Department for Transport on their responses, specifically on the progress of National Highway’s analysis of the feedback received in the recent consultation, further clarity on the 7.5tn weight limit and the difference that ongoing M1 improvement works may make on the traffic situation.
