Happy Brexit Day!

We got Brexit done! Today marks an exciting new chapter in the history of our country.

I’ve never once doubted that the UK has an extraordinary opportunity ahead – as an independent nation, free to determine our own future and form partnerships with old allies and new friends around the world.

Together with Boris Johnson and Gisela Stuart on those TV debate stages, and with many others right across the political divide, I stood before the country to make that case. I penned article after article for national and regional newspapers to highlight the benefits of the UK leaving the EU. I still fully believe in everything we campaigned for.

The deal offers the UK the best way forward outside of the EU. We have taken back control of our laws, trade, borders and money. And crucially, the four nations of the UK are leaving the EU together, as one – providing the basis of a new relationship with the EU based on free trade and friendly cooperation.

The UK has so much to be cheerful about. Our economic future outside the EU is incredibly bright. We are the world’s fifth largest economy, the eighth biggest manufacturer; we speak the world’s international business language; we have the best contract law; we set the highest employment and environmental standards; and we have one of the most trusted judicial systems in the world.

We can finally turn the page of this Brexit drama, and get on to the next chapter: focusing on the people’s priorities – our healthcare, security on our streets, our children’s education, and the economic prosperity that enables us to support all our superb public services.

I am proud of our democracy for delivering on the promise made to the British people over three years ago.

Here’s to our future!
